Odenton, MD: homes near Fort Meade and the MARC
Odenton is an unincorporated community in western Anne Arundel County that grew up around a railroad stop in 1868. Fort George G. Meade borders it, and its MARC station sits on the Penn Line between Baltimore and Washington.
Where Odenton is
Odenton formed in 1868 with the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad and is named for Oden Bowie; regular train service began July 2, 1872.[1]
It sits at the junction of MD 170 and MD 175, with MD 32 along its northern side. Fort George G. Meade, home of U.S. Cyber Command, borders it to the west.[1][2]
Communities include Seven Oaks, Piney Orchard and Odenton Town Center.[1]
Housing stock
Odenton is newer than most of the county: 18,601 homes with a median year built of 1999. 29% went up in the 1990s, 27% in the 2000s and 17% in the 2010s. About 35% are townhouses, 29% detached houses and 35% in condo and apartment buildings.[3]

Getting around
- MARC Penn Line from Odenton: about 23 to 46 minutes to Baltimore Penn Station, 27 to 43 minutes to Washington Union Station and 7 to 15 minutes to BWI, on the weekday schedule.[4]
- Fort Meade gates (hours as posted by the garrison): Reece Road (ACP 3) is open 24 hours; Rockenbach (ACP 1) and Mapes/MD 32 (ACP 7) are open 5:30 am to 6 pm on weekdays; Mapes/MD 175 (ACP 4) has limited weekday hours. All but Reece are closed on weekends.[5]
Before you buy or rent here
- Anne Arundel County charges a 1.0% transfer tax under $1 million (1.5% at $1 million and up) and recordation tax of $7.00 per $1,000.[6]
- Maryland's state transfer tax is 0.5% of the price. When the buyer is a first-time Maryland homebuyer who will live in the home, the state rate drops to 0.25%, paid entirely by the seller.[7]
- Anne Arundel's homestead credit caps the taxable assessment increase on an owner-occupied home at 2% a year, one of the lowest caps in the state.[8]
- Unincorporated Anne Arundel County does not license single-family rentals. Buildings with two or more units need a multiple dwelling license with a Health Department inspection, and short-term rentals must register and are capped at 120 days a year.[9][10]
- In our experience, Fort Meade moves cluster in late spring and summer. Listings and leases that are ready by May get the most attention from relocating buyers and renters.
